Radiant Heated Shop

Project Type
Home + Shop
Location
Plain, Wa

Plain, WA lives up to its unassuming name, tucked on the eastern Washington state with little to offer anyone not drawn to snow-dusted forests or hot, sun-soaked summers. Yet for this client, the property carried deep sentimental value, and they envisioned a warm, welcoming retreat to shelter all the “big toys” that power their family’s adventures in every season.

The land holds two straightforward structures, both modest in form. The small “cabin” began life as two basic storage sheds sometime in the 1980s, then sat for more than a decade gathering dust and pine needles. With fresh eyes, the new owner saw past the neglect and imagined a minimalist camping cabin; after adding insulation, a compact electric boiler, a hydronic radiant panel system, and new flooring, the 157‑square‑foot space is now a cozy, comfortable haven for weekend escapes.

The shop was built with a singular, practical mission: protect snowmobiles and camping trailers from snow, rain, and the slow creep of mold, no matter what the weather brings. Radiant heat throughout the slab ensures meltwater dries quickly, keeping gear in top condition and ready for use, season after season.

This project stands out for its admirable simplicity and honest practicality. Radiant heating proved to be an ideal choice, keeping energy costs in check while preserving both the space and the equipment it was designed to serve.
